Overstreet Named New Chief in Charleston, W.Va.

Chuck Overstreet has been named the new chief in Charleston, W.Va., making him the first black fire chief in the department’s history.

In 1991, Overstreet was an employee in the parts department at a city car dealership. He learned that the city was looking for minority firefighters after a court-ordered affirmative-action program was instituted.

Overstreet said that financial issues would be among the biggest challenges he would have to overcome in the days to come. He also pointed out that the city has had difficulty funding the firefighters' pension fund. Read the entire article here.
