Ohio Chief: State Law Costing Us Volunteers

Bakersville (Ohio) Fire Chief Bill Bergen thinks he will lose almost half of his 21 volunteer firefighters, or the older members of his volunteer fire department.

From the Coshocton Tribune: Bakersville (Ohio) Fire Chief Bill Bergen thinks he will lose almost half of his 21 volunteer firefighters, or the older members of his department, thanks to a 2008 state law that requires volunteer firefighters to take 18 hours of training each year.

According to the law, volunteers who have allowed their certification to lapse for more than 18 months must attend 36 hours of retraining and take a test. Before the 2008 law, firefighters were not required to be recertified.
