City calls for Firefighters' Bargaining Team to Resign

Should firefighters actually strike, management staff has been trained to provide “basic firefighting service.” This does not include responding to accidents or high-angle rescue calls.

From The Western Star: Shortly after getting the word from media sources that firefighters rejected a tentative deal, Corner Brook Mayor Neville Greeley said he expects the negotiating team of the International Association of Fire Fighters Local 1222 to resign.

He said they clearly do not have the support of the union, after 93% of the members voted Monday to reject the offering. Greeley said that vote is a vote of non-confidence.

Should firefighters actually strike Greeley said management staff has been trained to provide “basic firefighting service.” This does not include responding to accidents or high-angle rescue calls. Firefighters also handle complaints for the city.

Neither Greeley or union local president Peter Daniels said they would talk about the details of the tentative agreement, or where the differences between the two sides lie. Both sides are supposed to be adhering to the self-imposed media blackout — which is part of an agreement that has been in place for more than a year since the current contract expired at the end of 2010. However Greeley did say the contract offered a wage increase of 7% in 2012 and a 16.4% increase over the life of the four-year agreement.
