Chicago Firefighters Suspended After Fake Drill

Two firefighters have been suspended in a 2009 case in which 10 on-duty Chicago (IL) firefighters helped a colleague renovate his home under the pretense of conducting fire training.

From the Chicago Tribune: Ten on-duty Chicago firefighters helped a colleague renovate his home under the guise of a training exercise, but neighbors who witnessed the events reported the firefighters to authorities.

Investigators later determined firehouse supervisors — and the firefighter they helped — misled them in an attempt to cover it up. Inspector General Joseph Ferguson recommended that two fire lieutenants and the home-owning firefighter be suspended without pay for 30 days, the sources said.

But fire department leadership ordered three-day suspensions for one lieutenant and the firefighter who owns the home, but the other lieutenant faced no punishment because he retired last month after 30 years on the job, sources said.

Chicago Firefighters Union Local 2 is contesting the suspensions, suggesting that "there are greater things for the inspector general" to focus on, but declined to discuss the specifics of the case. Read the entire article here.
