Cape Girardeau Mo.) Fire Chief Rick Ennis recently asked FIRE CHIEF Associate Editor Mary Rose Roberts to appear in front of the city council regarding the 2009 International Council Codes and fire safety. The city had debated and decided not to include the ICC’s recommendations to install sheetrock as a preventive measure in new residential structures using lightweight construction materials in updated city codes. The ICC identified sheetrock installation has a must in lieu of residential fire sprinklers in order to contain a fire and protect against floor collapse during an incident. Roberts speaks after local builder, Mike Annis, provides his economic perspective on the issue.
