Fire Chief

Bruegman to Leave Fresno for Anaheim

Bruegman, who has served as Fresno's chief since 2003, is leaving a town of more than 500,000 residents for Anaheim, which has less than 400,000 people.

From the Orange County Register: Randy Bruegman will be the new chief of the Anaheim (Calif.) Fire Department starting Oct. 11.

Bruegman, who has served as Fresno's chief since 2003, is leaving a town of more than 500,000 residents for Anaheim, which has less than 400,000 people. Bruegman said he was attracted to Anaheim because of the things that make it a unique tourist destination and its expansive borders that stretch into wilderness area.

He comes to town as the city is battling to balance its budget. Last year, Anaheim fire took an engine out of service to help save money.

The new chief replaces Roger Smith, who retired at the end of last year. The position went vacant for months while the city conducted a nationwide search – and by design, so that the city could save money on the chief's salary, which tops $200,000.

Every retirement is different, but I knew after I retired I was going to need something to keep me busy and it had to be something I enjoyed.
