In 1980, a group of forward-thinking deputy chiefs invited several fire mechanics to meet with them, in the hopes of creating the Washington State Fire Mechanic Association. The deputy chiefs then pitched the to the Washington State Fire Chiefs Association, which accepted it.
The WSFMA held its first class that November in Yakima, and the classroom was overflowing with 150 people. A second class on the same subject was held three months later, and again was filled to capacity. The response proved the need for structured classes for mechanics on the changing technology in fire apparatus.
In 1983, WSFMA expanded to a workshop format and moved from Yakima to Ellensburg at Central Washington University and enrollment increased. WSFMA currently holds two workshops per year, spring and fall, with 150 to 175 attendees per session. WSFMA board meetings are held six times per year and open to all members.
For several years, the most popular classes were Detroit Diesel or Allison Transmission, but recently electrical classes are a premium. Significant changes in multiplexing and interfacing systems continue to be a challenge as no two systems are the same even though both are suppose to work off the same principle.
One of the most popular programs the WSFMA offers is the training and preparation for the Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification tests. At the same time, the association continues to strive to educate others in the emergency services of the technical skills and professionalism of WSFMA’s members. At the same time, their efforts for recognition are balanced with having fun. Consequently, the ever-popular Creeper Drags are a way for mechanics to show off their skills and have fun.
