Two Firefighters Die in Apparatus Accidents
Two firefighters died in separate and unrelated accidents involving fire department apparatus. In both cases, the apparatus went off the road and the victims were thrown from the cabs.
A 25-year-old firefighter in New York was the driver and sole occupant of an apparatus returning from a fire. As the vehicle came down a grade and entered a curve, it went off the roadway and struck some trees. The driver was ejected and injured. The impact heavily damaged the cab and caused the apparatus water tank to separate from the chassis and continue further down the road, coming to rest in the opposite lanes of traffic. The victim died of the injuries.
In Ohio, a 58-year-old firefighter was driving an engine enroute to a fire when it left the roadway and crashed. The driver was ejected and seriously injured. A second firefighter in the engine also was injured, but managed to crawl out of the cab and begin first aid on the driver. The victim was airlifted to a hospital, but died of the injuries.
