The National Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross recently took delivery of a new canteen truck. The canteen is a Dodge Sprinter that was customized by Texas-based Kitchen on Wheels.

“We received a grant for a new canteen vehicle to serve the citizens and first responders in the capital region,” said Ian Sterne, the chapter’s coordinator of response technology.
The new American Red Cross canteen is housed in Fairfax, Va., along with other Red Cross response vehicles, including the previous canteen truck, two canteen trailers and seven EMS response units.

According to Sterne, the new canteen can carry 60 gallons of fresh water, 1,400 gallons of coffee, a large microwave, and insulated containers for hot or cold food. The exterior has an extendable awning and scene lighting.

The D.C. Department of Fire and EMS provided input for the new vehicle. “We work closely with the emergency management agencies, whether local or state emergency operations centers,” Sterne said.
