Did you know that using the wrong tools or methods to wash the outside of radiators can damage the cores and may significantly reduce their cooling capabilities?

The days of cast-iron cooling fins on vehicle radiators are long gone. Modern radiator cores have thin fins with raised louvers punched in them to increase heat transfer and improve cooling. Using a high-pressure washer or a compressed air nozzle to blast mud and bugs off the core can bend the fins and flatten the louvers. The proper method is to use a soft bristle brush and a low flow of water from a garden hose to gently scrub and rinse the face of the radiator core. A bug screen on the outside of the grille may help keep the radiator clean between washings. Consult the vehicle manufacturer for recommendations.
