Help for Older Apparatus
Did you know that you can still find parts, service and information for older apparatus? Whether you need manuals to maintain a reserve aerial ladder or parts to restore an antique pumper, there are lots of sources to help you.
Many companies specialize in stocking specific types or brands of older components and have knowledgeable people who can help find what you need. Other companies provide restoration services for small components and can make your old parts work like new again. In many cases, these companies are as close as a telephone call.
Another good source of information is the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Motor Fire Apparatus in America, which has chapters all over the United States. To view some of the many resources listed on the California Chapter of SPAAMFAA Web site, go to www.calspaamfaa.com.
For more information about the national SPAAMFAA organization, go to www.spaamfaa.org.
This feature offers a variety of short tips and facts about apparatus maintenance and testing. Look for it every month. Submissions of 150 words or less are welcome from our readers, subject to editing. Send them to In Service Senior Editor Chris Cavette.
