The National Fire Protection Association has updated NFPA 1906, Wildland Fire Apparatus, to include several new and revised requirements. The update took effect with apparatus ordered on or after Feb. 26.

The latest edition includes new requirements for manufacturer certification tests, illumination and labeling of controls, water-tank baffling, and additional headroom for seating locations. Red seatbelts are specified for better visibility and accountability, if available.

One of the most significant changes is a new system of pump ratings, which are now divided into seven classifications depending on the type of pump and the maximum rated pressure. Within each classification, pumps must meet a specific flowrate at the maximum pressure and also meet a second flowrate at a lower pressure. For example, a centrifugal pump rated 70gpm at 100psi must also be able to flow 135gpm at 65psi. Likewise, a centrifugal pump rated 15gpm at 300psi must also produce 40gpm at 150psi.

The updated standard applies to all wildland firefighting apparatus capable of pump-and-roll operations that are outfitted with pumps rated between 10gpm and 500gpm, a water tank, hose and equipment. It covers both fixed and slip-on pump and tank configurations.
