What’s the most significant change you have seen in the equipment area for the emergency services industry?

The most significant change that I have seen in the past 10 to 15 years has been the adaptation of electronics and multiplexing in fire apparatus. I’m continually amazed at the information available to the operator at the touch of the button as well as the improvements that electronics have made in vehicle efficiency and safety.

In your area of expertise, what is the top emerging issue that fire chiefs should be aware of?

As pressure on fire department budgets continue to mount, it’s more important than ever to make the most out of every dollar available in the equipment budget. For those that have the resources to purchase new equipment, make sure to get the most out of your apparatus by specifying proven components and working with a reputable dealer and manufacturer. If new equipment is not in your budget, consider retrofitting older equipment such as second line engines with equipment that will extend the vehicle’s useful life and effectiveness on the fireground.

If you are buying (or retrofitting) equipment with a foam proportioning system, consider using a single foam tank and carrying Class A foam. Dual tanks to carry Class A and B are more expensive initially as well as over the long haul. They also increase the chance of cross contamination. Since 95%-plus of most departments’ fires are Class A, keep that foam in the tank. On the off chance you need Class B, you can either use off-board pick-up or an eductor.

What’s the best advice you have ever received?

If you don’t know the answer to a question, don’t try to fake your way through it. Admit that you don’t know, go do your research then — most importantly — follow-up.

Every retirement is different, but I knew after I retired I was going to need something to keep me busy and it had to be something I enjoyed.
