Illinois Department Specifies Interface Pumper
Wildland-urban interface pumpers are being used in many parts of the United States. One of the most recent deliveries went to the Wheeling (Ill.) Fire Department for use in structural firefighting, wildland firefighting, rescues and emergency medical incidents.
Rosenbauer built the versatile interface pumper on an International 4x4 chassis with a four-door cab. It features a Rosenbauer NH 1,250-gpm pump, Rosenbauer Fix Mix foam system and big 1,000-gallon water tank with a 60-gallon foam tank. To give the unit flexibility to handle different types of fires, it has both a TFT Tornado monitor on the front bumper and a TFT Monsoon monitor above the pump panel.
For rescue situations, the 4x4 drive allows off-road use, and a Cummins Onan 8-kw generator provides electrical power for area lights and tools. Sensitive drugs and medical equipment are carried securely in a compartment within the cab.
Interface pumpers are versatile units that combine pumps, tanks and firefighting equipment capable of handling structure fires with 4x4 drive, remote-control bumper monitors and good ground clearance capable of handling wildland fires. Many departments also specify other components and equipment to handle rescues and EMS calls.
