Grant Aims to Retain Volunteer Firefighters

To counteract the rapid decline in volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania, the federal government presented a $660,052 grant to the Sellersville Volunteer Fire Department; $570,000 is to fund initiatives geared toward recruiting and retaining firefighters. The Intelligencer reports that the remaining funds will purchase two new thermal imaging cameras and 37 sets of gear and clothing, replacing the 25-year-old outfits, some of which no longer meet safety standards.

Sellersville will use the funds to cover the cost of physicals and immunizations of new members, provide insurance for firefighters killed or dismembered in the line of duty, expand a cadet training and mentorship program, pay for training new members, hand out annual benefits over the next four years ranging from $500 to $1,000 to top-performing firefighters and give monetary length of service awards to long-serving members.
