A firefighter was killed while marking hydrant locations along a roadway in North Carolina.

The accident occurred after the firefighter stopped a department brush pumper to mark the location of a hydrant with spray paint. After activating the warning lights of the pumper, the victim exited the cab and moved in front of the apparatus to make a mark on the pavement. Another vehicle struck the apparatus from behind, causing it to lurch forward and hit the firefighter, who died on the scene from the impact.
