E-ONE Fighting Corrosion with ECK

In an effort to prevent corrosion occurring when stainless steel touches aluminum, E-ONE is treating its new fire engines with ECK. Short for "Electrolysis, Corrosion, Kontrol," ECK was developed by the Van Nay Corp.

"ECK is used by most of the world class emergency apparatus manufacturers to prevent the natural corrosive reaction when stainless steel hardware is used to assemble aluminum,” said Van Nay President Richard Nay Sr. On fire apparatus, such corrosion can occur when stainless-steel hinges are used to mount aluminum compartment doors.

According to the Van Nuy Corp., E-ONE and its paint coatings supplier tested ECK coating using industry standard salt spray ASTM-B-117 laboratory methods. "We were delighted with the results showing that the ECK coating prevented the dissimilar metal corrosion reaction,” said Rick Reed, E-ONE's paint shop superintendent. Technical data on ECK can be found at www.vannay.com.
