The new Dodge Ram 4500 and 5500 models for 2008 are designed with gross vehicle weight ratings of 14,000 pounds and 19,500 pounds respectively. They can be specified with a diesel engine and an automatic transmission and are suitable for a variety of fire and rescue applications.
The new chassis have 52-gallon fuel tanks and 34-inch wide frame rail spacing, similar to those found on heavy-duty trucks. There are four cab lengths and a choice of 4x2 or 4x4 drive. The standard engine is a Cummins 6.7-liter diesel that produces 305hp and 610 foot-pound peak torque. A six-speed automatic transmission with a pto option is available. Three fused battery feeds and a high-amperage grounding stud are located at the rear of the chassis to allow easy installation of power equipment such as area lights, starters on engine-driven pumps, electrically driven hydraulic pumps for rescue tools and other components.
