New Apparatus are Wider
Did you know that many new apparatus are as much as 4 inches wider than older models? For some departments, the extra width can cause clearance problems in stations with narrow apparatus bays and doors.
The problem occurs primarily with custom chassis apparatus where the new 2007 engines required larger radiators and additional exhaust treatment systems. To provide room for these components, some manufacturers increased the width of their custom cabs by several inches. In some cases, they also increased the width of the apparatus bodies to match the cabs. Certain safety-related items, such as mirrors and turn signals, may stick out even further.
To avoid problems, departments should know the dimensions of their stations, including heights, lengths and widths of bays, doors and protruding objects inside the bays such as overhead heaters or exhaust extraction equipment. This information should be included in new apparatus specifications — for example, “No part of the apparatus or any equipment carried on the apparatus shall exceed "X" inches width/length/height to ensure adequate clearance within the station.”
