Departments Are Responsible for Outside Work

Did you know that fire departments are responsible for all work performed on their apparatus — even if it's done by outside shops?

In the March 2006 issue of In Service Online, I noted that departments are responsible for ensuring their technicians are qualified to perform specific work. That responsibility extends to work performed by outside shops as well. When taking apparatus to a dealer or other service facility, departments must not only specify the work to be performed, but also the qualifications required. (Read that article here.)

For example, many departments want to have the structural components and control systems of their aerial ladders and platforms worked on by technicians who have EVTCC certification or factory training for aerials. Likewise, other departments may want persons with specific qualifications to work on transmissions or conduct pump tests.

If an outside shop does not have technicians that meet your requirements, then you need to take your apparatus elsewhere. After all, they're your apparatus, and you are responsible for them.
