Did you know that high levels of electromagnetic energy from certain radios can cause electronic engine controls to malfunction? The results vary according to the energy levels and engines, but some manufacturers warn users to be aware of the problem.
Electromagnetic interference can be caused by many sources. On vehicles, typical sources include two-way radios and other communication equipment that emits electromagnetic energy in the form of radio waves. If an onboard radio is not installed properly it can potentially interfere with the electronic engine controls. Likewise, very high power incoming electromagnetic energy can potentially cause engine problems including incorrect diagnostic fault logging.
To avoid problems, read the engine manufacturer’s manual regarding electromagnetic interference and always follow the radio manufacturer’s guidelines for power levels, antenna locations and other considerations.
