Ga. Firefighter Killed in Overturned Cab

Stockton (Ga.) Firefighter Derek North was killed on Feb. 23 when the apparatus he was riding in overturned.

North, 34, was riding in the officer seat of the department’s 1966 Ford Fire Knocker in response to a fire call. The apparatus overturned at an intersection when it reportedly swerved to avoid a collision with other traffic.

Two other firefighters were injured in the crash, including North’s brother Chad, who was operating the vehicle. The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

North was the fire service’s 15th line-of-duty death in 2009,  according to the U.S. Fire Administration.
