The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection plans to buy a new wildland pumper design as the backbone of its fleet.

The new design, known as the Model 34, will feature a PTO-driven 500gpm, two-stage main pump for stationary pumping operations and a diesel engine-driven 175gpm auxiliary pump for mobile pumping operations. The use of two separate pumps differs from the current Model 14, which has a single hydraulically driven 500gpm, two-stage pump for both stationary and mobile pumping.

Other features of the new Model 34 are expected to include a four-door cab on a commercial medium-duty truck chassis, 4x4 drive and covered hosebeds. Placer Fire Apparatus built the initial units, which were equipped with Darley pumps.
