Boston Fire Commissioner Roderick Fraser promised to hire more civilian mechanics following a consultant’s report that recommends overhauling the department’s vehicle repair methods, according to the Boston Herald.
Fraser commissioned Maryland-based Mercury Associates after the January death of Lt. Kevin M. Kelley, who was killed after the brakes failed on his ladder truck. The crash brought the department’s lack of a fleet maintenance program to national attention.
Fraser said he will hire three licensed mechanics and a fleet maintenance manager and in a year review whether firefighters who work in that division should be reassigned.
