The Granite City Steel Co. began operations in Granite City, Ill., in the 1890s. U.S. Steel took over the facility in 2003 and it now is known as the Granite City Works. The plant fire department's primary engine was built by American LaFrance on a short-wheelbase chassis. It has a large pump, foam system, dry chemical system and on-board generator to handle many types of fires and emergencies within the plant, as well as to provide mutual aid to surrounding departments.

The BP Cooper River chemical plant in Wando, S.C., needed a big foam pumper to protect its extensive production facilities. The plant is located within a large wetlands and forested habitat, and fires and other incidents need to be controlled quickly and effectively. The company specified a Pierce Velocity pumper with a high-volume pump and large foam tank. To give the pump operator good visibility and allow more accurate delivery of master streams, the department specified a top-mount pump panel.

Midland, Mich., is the world headquarters of Dow Corp. It also is the location of a massive operations facility that includes more than 30 production plants and 550 buildings on 1,900 acres. To protect this sprawling complex, the fire department purchased a Rosenbauer pumper capable of delivering water or foam through a 65-foot elevated master stream. The foam system can draw from a large onboard foam tank and produces 6% solutions at full pump capacity through the monitor and handlines.

Valero acquired the Memphis Refinery in 2005 and invested more than $245 million to upgrade the facility. The refinery produces gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and other petrochemicals, which are distributed to local markets by truck, barge and pipeline. To help protect its sizable investment in the plant and distribution facilities, the company purchased a Ferrara pumper with a high-volume pump, large foam tank and remote-control foam monitor. The unit also carries large-diameter hose and is equipped with electrically actuated discharge valves.
