Established in 1956, FIRE CHIEF is the magazine for "Every Department, Every Leader." Articles by fire officers from across the country and overseas cover a wide variety of areas that are important to today's fire chief. In addition, our monthly lineup of departments provides even more information, in a quick, accessible format.
FIRE CHIEF's features examine issues that are of particular importance to the chief officers who lead and manage fire departments. In the course of any given year, specific feature topics might include training, safety and health, communications, fire investigation, finance and budgeting, professional development, incident command, hazmat response, vehicle maintenance and other crucial areas.
Each month, FIRE CHIEF includes Chief Ronny J. Coleman's highly popular "Chief's Clipboard" and "Volunteer Voice," which addresses the issues and concerns unique to nearly 80% of the nation's fire departments Other columns include "EMS Viewpoints," "IAFC Insights," and "Legal Matters," a timely legal column written by lawyers with long involvement in the fire service.
Our monthly "Dispatches" section aims to keep chiefs abreast of the developments that affect them and their communities at the local, state and federal levels. Within that section is "Size-Up," a question-and-answer session with a prominent industry personality.
A full range of service departments rounds out the magazine: Product Focus, Equipment News and New Deliveries.
FIRE CHIEF's monthly circulation is slightly over 52,000 readers (circulation audit by BPA), the majority of them chief officers, with a sizable contingent of training officers, safety officers and other titles and ranks.
In addition, our pass-along readership is remarkably high. On average, about six people read every copy of FIRE CHIEF, which means that our total monthly readership is over 300,000.

In my experience leadership in fire departments are scared to initiate true succession planning as they feel threatened by the knowledge being imparted to the future leaders.
